Structural T&G Chipboard, Two Jobs in One
Structural T&G chipboard is a great option for a big renovation or a new suspended floor. The system uses a structural 22mm tongue-and-groove chipboard with pre-routed grooves that the heating pipe sits straight into, so the floor deck and the underfloor heating go down together. That makes it ideal for full refurbishments and new builds. In an older home the existing floorboards are often squeaky and bouncy with age, so if you're replacing the floor anyway, or it hasn't been laid yet in a new build, this system handles both jobs at once.
Most customers and contractors see a real saving here. The alternative is paying a carpenter to lay ordinary chipboard flooring, then paying us and buying extra materials to fit an overlay system on top, which also adds at least 16mm to the floor height. The structural chipboard system does both in one go, with no height penalty from a separate overlay.
To complete the structural integrity, a 6mm cement board or plywood is mechanically fixed over the chipboard, because the pre-routed grooves do weaken the board on their own. Once the 6mm overboard is down you can immediately feel how solid the floor is. On the project shown below, the flooring installer who followed us commented on how sturdy it felt. We use cement board rather than ply because it's better for thermal mass and heat transfer, and it comes printed with markings showing exactly where the pipe runs, so nothing gets screwed into a pipe.
The detail that matters is how it goes down. We lay the boards and the pipe at the same time, so the chipboard never has to be routed on site, because routing it weakens the structural integrity. Instead we run the pipe under the flooring and drill through for it to pop back up, working its way to and from the manifold. We're often asked to just lay the boards and let a plumber or renewables installer fit the pipe afterwards, but that forces them to route the boards later, which weakens the floor and causes problems down the line.
